1 – Introduction

This User Guide provides instructions on how to use the Discover Page to find out which data products are available through the geospatial data service.

The Discover page provides a simple interface that allows you to quickly see what data products are available within the various Data Collections.  It can be used to quickly see and decide whether any of the data is of interest for your requirements, before adding them to the map for further investigation.  The Discover page allows you to browse the Data Collections, and view grouped lists of all the data products they contain.  If a product is of interest, more detailed summary information can be read, and then the data can be added as a layer to the map viewer or directly to the basket for ordering.

All visitors to the geospatial data service can view the Discover page and its contents, you do not need to login to your account first.

2 – Data Collections and Groups

The data products available through the geospatial data service have been arranged into a series of thematic Data Collections, each one relating to a particular theme.  Within each Data Collection are one or more groups of data products, with the group classification being based on for example data licence type or data product family.  This provides a three-level hierarchical arrangement to make it easier to quickly find products that are relevant to your interests:

Data Collection >

Data Group >

Data Product

If you want to learn more about each of the Data Collections, their groups, and individual data products, please see the Data Guides resources section for more information.

3 – Opening the Discover Page

To access the Data Discovery section of the website, click on the ‘Discover’ button on the top menu banner:

This will take you to the Discovery page of the site:

You can return to the Home page of the website at any time by clicking on the ‘Geospatial data’ text in the far left of the top menu banner:

4 – Browsing the Data

On the Discovery page of the site, the individual Data Collections are listed on the left hand menu bar:

To view a list of all the data groups and products available within a Data Collection, simply click on a Data Collection title.

You will then see a list of all the data groups and products available in the selected Data Collection on the main section of the page:

Individual data products are nested within data groups.  Data groups appear in the list as blue entries, and the data products within them as white.  You can expand and collapse the group levels by using the downwards facing arrow to the left of each group title:

5 – Viewing data product summary information

Once you have the list of data products presented, you can learn more about an individual data product by clicking on its title (or the ‘i’ icon) in the list:

This will expand the data product entry and display some additional summary information:

Clicking on the data product again will collapse the additional summary information.  You can expand and collapse as many group and data product entries in the list as you wish.  If you click on a different Data Collection in the left hand menu, the list of groups and data products on the main section of the page will update accordingly.

6 – Adding data to the map

Once you’ve identified a data product which is of interest, if you wish to view the data in the map viewer you can easily do this by using the slider switches that appear in the lists on the Discover page.  You can also add data layers to the map from the Map page (using the Catalogue tab of the Data Catalogue Menu), and if this has previously been done they will appear in the Discovery page with the switch already in the ‘on’ position.  Changing the viewing switches in either the Discover page or the Catalogue menu will also change them in the other interface – there is no priority and the control performs the same from either interface.  The ability to add data to the map is available in the Discover page simply for convenience.

The ability to add data to the map is offered at different two levels:

6.1 – Add a data product to the map

To add an individual data product to the map viewer, simply click on the slider switch next to the relevant data product.  If you change your mind, click on the switch again to remove that data from the map viewer:

6.2 – Add a data group to the map

You can also add a whole data product grouping to the map viewer at once, by using the slider switch displayed at the group’s header level:

If you use the group level switch, all the data products within that group will have their switches set automatically.

7 – Adding a data product to the basket

If you’ve found a data product that you wish to order and download immediately (without viewing the data on the map first), you can do this directly from the Discover page.  Once you know which data product you wish to order, simply click on the Basket icon displayed alongside the summary information in the expanded data product entry in the list:

Once this has been done, you will see the Basket icon to the right in the top menu banner update with a count of items in the basket:

For more information on using the basket, please see the Ordering and Downloading Data User Guide.
