BGS Geological Indicators of Flooding

Dataset Description:

The BGS Geological Indicators of Flooding dataset maps areas vulnerable to flooding by rivers and the sea, based on the geological superficial deposits theme  within the BGS Geology 50k dataset (DiGMapGB-50).  This superficial deposits data has been characterised for likely susceptibility to flooding by the following methods:

  • For inland river floodplains, previous floods have deposited mud, sand, and gravel which are commonly mapped as alluvium deposits.  This can also include lake deposits and river terraces.
  • For coastal plains where the sea has formerly occupied the land, previous floods have deposited a range of marine deposits such as tidal flats and low-lying raised beaches.

The Geological Indicators of Flooding dataset is a 1:50,000 scale vector polygonised dataset, which shows higher and lower susceptibility categories for both fluvial and coastal flood types.  As the data is based on geological deposits only, it does not consider man-made influences such as house building or flood protection schemes, nor low-lying areas where flooding could occur but is not evident from geological materials.
